GLB viewer online

Drop a .glb or .gltf file onto the box and it opens right here. You also get a verdict on whether it will work on a product page: how big it is, how many triangles it has, and what it still needs before augmented reality will work.

The file is not uploaded anywhere. It opens in your browser and never leaves your computer: no server, no account, nothing stored.

Drop your GLB file here or click to choose one. .gltf works too

What a GLB file is

GLB is the standard format for 3D models on the web. A single file carries the geometry, materials and textures together, and browsers open it with nothing to install. glTF is the same format, only split across several files.

It is the format Shopify asks for when you upload a product model, and the one Android uses for augmented reality.

How to open a GLB without installing anything

Drop it into the box above. It opens in your browser, you can rotate it with the mouse and zoom with the wheel. Nothing is sent to a server: the file never leaves your computer, so you can open client models without thinking twice.

Why your GLB can look fine here and still fail in a store

A model that opens is not yet a model that sells. The report above checks three things, and together they decide whether it will work on a product page:

File size. Shopify recommends aiming for around 4 MB per model, and it automatically optimises anything over 15 MB. An 80 MB file will load, but the customer is gone before it ever appears.

Triangles. The more there are, the longer a phone takes to draw the model. A well made piece of furniture does not need hundreds of thousands of them.

Augmented reality on iPhone. This is the one that catches everybody out: iOS does not open GLB files. Its viewer only accepts USDZ, and when you hand it a GLB there is no error message: nothing happens at all. We cover it in full in the augmented reality guide (in Spanish).

Frequently asked questions

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The viewer runs entirely in your browser from a local URL. The file is never sent anywhere, nothing is stored and nobody else can see it. You can prove it to yourself: disconnect from the network once the page has loaded and the viewer keeps working.

How large a file can it handle?

Whatever your computer can cope with, because there is no upload. That said, if your model goes over 15 MB it is worth compressing it before putting it in a store.

What is Shopify's file size limit for 3D models?

Shopify recommends aiming for around 4 MB per model, and it automatically optimises files over 15 MB. Anything above that is replaced by Shopify's own compressed version, so the file on your product page will not be the one you uploaded. The report above tells you which side of those two numbers your file falls on.

Why doesn't my GLB work in AR on an iPhone?

Because iOS does not open GLB files. Its viewer only accepts USDZ, and when you hand it a GLB there is no error message: nothing happens at all. For AR to work on an iPhone you need a USDZ as well as the GLB.

Does it open OBJ, FBX or STL files?

Not here. This tool is for GLB and glTF, the formats the web and online stores actually run on. Anything else has to be converted first.

Why does my model look grey, with no colour?

Almost always because it is a plain glTF and the textures are missing: they live in separate files alongside it. A GLB packs them into the single file, so it never has that problem.
